Registrar testimonial

Teaching Session

Testimonial by dr Kevin Yong (GMG registrar 2005). "I first visited Geraldton during my 6th year rural GP term.  It was a fun and laid back rotation, but I had no idea I would be back 5 years later as a rural GP registrar, with plans to stay on into my early career as a GP.

I am currently doing my Advanced training at the Geraldton Medical Group. I enjoy working with all the staff  here, and the pay compares very well to what other registrars are earning. The Group are currently in the process of developing a brand new high tech practice. This is quite an exciting time for the practice, which had been in the same premises for over 20 years.

I have been here for my Basic term and will stay on for subsequent training and beyond. I have been able to stay at the same practice as there have been good opportunities to experience various styles of medical practice at different locations..."

"In terms of training: the practice partners all contribute to teaching and are more than happy to be approached.  They all do procedural work in anaesthetics and obstetrics. There is a good range of medical presentations at the practice. The consultants in town are also happy to provide teaching and I have been arranging tutorials with them with funds from WAGPET. There is opportunity for private inpatient work at SJOG. The Midwest Division of GP arranges a weekly educational breakfast meeting as well as other educational activities. There is also a group of  5th year medical students in town for the year and it can be useful to attend some of their tutorials with the consultants. Fulfilling the educational requirements of GP training is not a problem with the Geraldton Medical Group and in Geraldton in general.

One the main attractions for moving to Geraldton is the fantastic lifestyle here. Geraldton has come a long way since my student days. The town is booming with new road works, regional hospital, fisheries and foreshore development in full progress. The roster is very reasonable and the ease of travel around town mean that getting involved in the community is easy and enjoyable.

Since moving to Geraldton I have enjoyed a back veranda with ocean views, a 5 minute walk to the beach, surfing before work, local wineries, a season of water polo, joining the camera club, the start of the soccer season and easy access to spots like Ellendale Pool and Kalbarri National Park. The weather is fantastic and so conducive to outdoor activities. The fishing and windsurfing are other attractions, which bring visitors from all around the world.

Geraldton is a great place to do your rural GP training and have a life at the same time. I would recommend the Geraldton Medical Group to anyone who loves the outdoors and is keen for new and interesting experiences in rural medicine."
