The Geraldton Medical Group is Geraldton's longest established medical centre. Together with the University Medical Practice it is part of the Panaceum Group.
GMG was formed in 1952, and operated from the Town Towers building before moving into the Royce Wing in the Community Health Centre near the Regional Hospital on Shenton Street in 1977.
With the construction of the new public hospital in 2004 and the establishment of resident doctors there, having an on site private practice was no longer deemed advantageous by Country Health, so the Medical Group had to to seek alternative premises in April 2005.
This move has precipitated many changes within the practice with the employment of a business development manager and an expansion of Enhanced Primary Care and the utilization of more nurses in patient management.
In 2005 a site at 111 Augustus St was leased and refurbished as temporary accommodation. This has been quickly outgrown anda second site at 32 Holland St was leased. Since 2006 more doctors, nurses and staff have joined the medical group.
The Panaceum Group
In 2004 land had been purchased for the construction of a new medical centre. On 27th October 2008 the Geraldton Medical Group re located to the new purpose built building at 233 Lester Avenue. This purpose built Health Centre has been developed by local GMG doctors committed to Geraldton, and provides clients with access to a wide range of health services in one convenient location, enabling better coordination of care for clients.
A health centre that offers comprehensive holistic care is a first for Geraldton. It's about looking after the whole patient, not just parts. The Geraldton Medical Group and the University Medical Practice are part of the Panaceum Group. The word ‘Panaceum’ is derived from ‘Panacea’. In Greek mythology, Panacea was the goddess of healing. She symbolizes the power of treatment of all diseases. Go to Panaceum.

Health Minister visits the Geraldton Medical Group
On Friday 2 October 2009 we hosted the Hon Nicola Roxon, former Federal Minister for Health. Ms Roxon was escorted on a tour of the new facility by Drs Figueidero, James-Wallace, Taylor and Slootmans, enjoying a much needed coffee from our Remedy Espresso Bar on the way!
After inspecting the facility, particularly the large Allied Health section and the medical practice occupied by the Geraldton Medical Group, Ms Roxon expressed her delight that a group of forward thinking doctors with vision had achieved an effective multi disciplinary primary health care facility without Government assistance. Indeed the Geraldton model is precisely what the Government is trying to achieve with its “Superclinics”.
After the tour Ms Roxon chatted with the staff and doctors on various issues pertaining to Health in the Midwest and Australia-wide. “It was an amazing opportunity to showcase what can be done with local expertise and discuss various issues affecting General Practice with the Minister”, said Dr Murray James-Wallace. “Ms Roxon is passionate about the future of Primary Health Care in Australia and was clearly interested in the views and suggestions of front line health professionals”.
